What to Expect When Visiting an Infusion Center for the First Time
Those going to the hospital for regular infusions now have the opportunity to go to an infusion center instead, where care is focused on infusions and no other medical needs. When someone decides to go to one of the infusion centers for the first time, it can be helpful to know what to expect.
Check In at the Center
At the person’s appointment, they will need to first check in with the staff. The staff members will review the appointment, ask about medical history, and check insurance information before the visit begins. If the paperwork wasn’t filled out ahead of time, it can be filled out now.
Meet the Care Team
The patient will then get to meet their care team and see the treatment area. The care team can help explain the process and answer any questions at that time. This is the perfect time to discuss any anxiety or other issues, as they can help the patient relax before the infusion begins.
Prepare for the Infusion
Before the infusion starts, the care team will need to check vital signs and, in most cases, prepare an IV line. This is a quick part of the process and is handled by the experts at the infusion center.
The Treatment Plan
Next, the biologic infusion therapy or other infusion treatment will begin. Patients will be able to relax throughout the infusion, and there may be reading materials, TVs, or other options for entertainment during this time. The care team will continuously monitor the patient and can provide extra help as needed.
After the Infusion
Once the infusion treatment is done, the care staff removes the IV, checks vital signs again, and provides instructions for aftercare. In most cases, patients can leave right away and resume their normal activities.
After the Visit
After the visit, the patient can still get answers to any questions they have by calling the center. If they need future infusion treatments, they can go ahead and schedule those at their convenience. They’ll receive the same care every time they need an infusion.
If you need an infusion or regular infusions, infusion centers can provide a better experience and enable you to get the right care easily. Before scheduling the first visit, ask to take a tour of the facility and learn more about the center, as this can help you know what to expect when you arrive for your first infusion.
