Welcome!

This guide was created for the CUNY Open Publishing Collective, a community of practice that emphasizes accessibility, equity, and open pedagogy in open publishing. The program supports the members of the collective in developing open educational resources, including textbooks, over three phases: the planning phase (Phase 1), development phase (Phase 2), and release and adoption phase (Phase 3). The guide serves as a repository of information, templates, and other tools to be used in Phase 1 of the program, when cohort members meet on a semi-weekly basis.

Program Objectives

Our objectives in this program are for you to

  • Create a project that offers something unique to your discipline, your CUNY students, and the field of open education.
  • Reflect on your current pedagogical practices
    • so that you can … understand and apply the principles of Universal Design for Learning in both the content you create and your approach to teaching that content
    • and … incorporate anti-racist, decolonial, and culturally sustaining pedagogical practices into your work.
  • Create an efficient workflow and apply best practices in creating, adapting, and/or adopting the text, images, and other media constituting your project and in collaborating with your team members.
  • Gain confidence using open tools and approaches in your project
    • so that you can … create accessible, interactive content
    • and … choose and explain why you chose a specific open license.
