21 Genitive

“Finally, let’s return to the second case, the Genitive. When you translate into English you add ‘of’ to the noun. When you see an English noun that has ‘of’ before it, translate it into Latin using the Genitive case.”

• Vir (nom. sing.) speī (gen. sing.) esse (inf.) dēbēs (2nd sing. pres.).
• A man (nom. pred.) of hope (gen.) to be (inf.) you (subj.) need. >>> You need to be a man of hope.
• You all will preserve the life of the country.
• You all (subj.) will preserve (verb, 2nd pl. fut.) the life (obj.) of the country (gen. sing.).
• Vōs (nom.) servābitis (2nd pl. fut.) vītam (acc.) patriae (gen.). >>> Vītam patriae servābitis.
