17 Success May Surprise You
Students often come to college with clear ideas about success, which focus on getting a well paying job. They often have little idea about what majors can lead to what jobs or whether they have real interest in a career in that area. For example, students often think they must major in poitical science if they are interested in law, biology if they are interested in becoming a doctor or social work if they want to help people and communities. They often don’t realize the important roles of college outside the classroom such as leadership experience, internships, study abroad and community engagement. They also don’t always understand the role of courses outside their major.
The assignment for this submodule focuses on career exploration.
Career Exploration
Note: if the students have earned their Lehman Know How badge they will have already started contact with the career exploration and development center by logging into Handshake. You can have them do more in Handshake by searching for jobs on campus or internship opportunities.
More self exploration using Focus 2
Students should watch the introductory video to the Career Exploration and Development Center.
- Go to Lehman’s Career Services Center Focus 2 site.
- Select ‘Create an Account’
- Type access code: lightning when asked.
- Complete your profile
- Complete the Self-Assessment (Work Interest, Values, Personality, Leisure, and Skills)
- After taking all the assessments select ‘Combine’ to retrieve report
- Select each of the assessment

- Review the results. Write a brief reflection on what you learned including what matched what you already thought, what surprised you, and how you might use Focus 2 for in the next year. Submit the reflection.
- If a student has a problem, have them email their assigned career counselor through Navigate. More information is available here: https://www.lehman.edu/career-services/index.php
Once students login they should do the self-assessment. They should submit a copy of the results as part of their homework. If you want to explore careers in more depth you are very welcome to work with the CEDC to schedule additional services, to ask the students to create a resume and have it reviewed, or to explore the other resources..
