Narrative Illustrations

The Headless Horseman chases Ichabod Crane
The Miriam and Ira D. Wallach Division of Art, Prints and Photographs: Picture Collection, The New York Public Library. “The headless horseman–Sleepy Hollow.” The New York Public Library Digital Collections. 1876.

This section of the course will be dedicated to illustrations for illustrated books. As I approach comics, graphic novels, and picture books in my second-level illustration course, Graphic Narrative, here we will focus on learning various illustration approached for what we call middle grade books: these are chapter books that include illustrations as well, generally for ages 9-12. Middle Grade illustrations are standard projects for illustrators, and test many things: how to keep a character consistent, how to work for an older audience than for picture books, how to make dynamic spot and full page illustrations–and how to do it all in effective, dynamic, dramatic black and white.
