Engineering, Science & Technology Field of Interest

What Is the Engineering, Science & Technology Field?

The Engineering, Science & Technology field focuses on understanding the world and using scientific, mathematical, and technical knowledge to develop practical solutions. The field includes a wide range of disciplines and career paths related to scientific discovery, engineering, technology, design, and innovation.

Scientists study the natural world, while engineers apply principles from fields such as physics, chemistry, biology, and mathematics to address real-world problems. Computer and information science programs prepare students to develop, manage, and support systems in a fast-growing and constantly evolving digital field.

The field also includes industrial design and music recording technology. Industrial design combines applied art and science to improve the appearance, usability, ergonomics, and production of manufactured products. Music recording technology provides an entry point into the technical side of sound production and the entertainment industry.

Notable Features of These Majors

While each major has a different focus, programs in this field often share several features:

  • Coursework that explores how science helps us understand the world around us
  • Opportunities to apply principles of science and mathematics to design solutions and improve everyday life
  • Study of technology and computer systems in fields that continue to grow and evolve
  • Exploration of how applied science, design, and technology can improve products, systems, and technical processes across industries

Approaches to Inquiry and Research

Majors within this field of interest encourage students to develop creative approaches and solutions to often open-ended problems through critical thinking and problem-solving methodologies. Students identify problems, collect and analyze data, and develop possible solutions to real-world problems. The field also promotes the study and development of creative designs, systems, technologies, and processes to create sustainable practices and environments. In many of the majors that form this field of interest, students learn how to apply mathematical, scientific, and technical knowledge.
