What Is the Health & Wellness Field?

The Health & Wellness field focuses on careers that promote the health and well-being of individuals and communities. This growing field offers a range of majors and career pathways connected to physical, mental, and community health.

Clinical health programs include fieldwork that prepares students to work directly with patients, clients, and animals in healthcare settings. Other programs explore areas such as nutrition, psychology, public and community health, and business.

Together, these majors help students understand the factors that influence health and prepare for careers focused on supporting people, animals, and communities.

While each major has a different focus, programs in this field often share several features:

  • A focus on careers that promote health and wellness
  • Exploration of career paths connected to healthcare, nutrition, psychology, public and community health, and business
  • Programs that may include fieldwork preparing students for careers on the front lines of healthcare
  • Opportunities to work with patients, clients, or animals in health-related settings

Approaches to Inquiry and Research

The various majors in this field of interest offer a broad range of approaches to inquiry and research focusing on individual and community health. Approaches focus on both biological and scientific knowledge and explorations of the sociocultural contexts in which illness and health materialize. Students are encouraged to become critical thinkers, learn inquiry and problem-solving, and embrace global perspectives. Methods include observation, surveys, interviews, textual analysis, qualitative research, and laboratory research.
