Crafting Engaging Assignments with OER
In this chapter, we showcase a variety of innovative assignments developed by faculty using Open Educational Resources (OER) and public domain content. These assignments demonstrate how OER can be creatively adapted to meet course objectives while providing students with engaging, accessible learning experiences.
Each example in this chapter highlights how faculty have identified and combined OER, public domain, and Open Access materials to create assignments that encourage students to interact with data in meaningful ways—whether by instructing, describing, inferring, or comparing. The assignments not only reflect the potential of OER to enrich teaching but also show how these resources can be adapted and remixed to fit a variety of disciplines and learning goals, fostering collaboration and innovation.
