What motivates this book?
After several years of teaching a course on animal physiology at CCNY, we have realized that our approach needs an integrative framework to fulfill our mission to contribute to the biology major curriculum. It is our primary interest to provide a textbook resource for CCNY students who are majoring in biology. We would also like to provide useful materials for those who are considering an intersection with biology, such as students in the medical, psychology, engineering, computer science and liberal arts fields. Therefore, our goal is expansive and overreaching to other groups of students and professionals who may be interested in the perspective brought by the people contributing to this book.

We are thankful to our colleagues who have provided constructive criticism about the content and scope of the course, and to our students who have expressed their professional interests and hence, set expectations for what a physiology of organisms course should be about.
