The Medgar Evers College Chapter of the Men of SEEK Honor Society began in the Spring 2019 semester and has been led by Dr. John Williams. This organization honors the memory of Medgar Wiley Evers by promoting the pursuit of academic excellence in all fields of higher education, engaging the community of scholars in service to others, encouraging social and political awareness, and recognizing the outstanding achievements of the society’s members.
Our Mission:
MEC Men of SEEK Honor Society prepares men of color for their roles as citizens and leaders through community-based educational and service experiences. Active members of Men of Seek are engaged in a meaningful way, through the promotion of academic achievement, character building, fostering leadership skills, and encouraging empathy and civic responsibility for all students across all CUNY campuses.
Proposed Agenda:
Men of SEEK is an initiative through the Office of Special Programs that will provide academic enrichment, social engagement, personal development, and professional preparation. Our target population for this initiative is college men of color at Medgar Evers College (CUNY): however, any CUNY gentlemen is encouraged to participate. You will be encouraged and supported in excelling academically and becoming involved in high-impact practices such as honors, internships, community service, studying abroad and graduate/professional school preparation.
The Men of SEEK experience is designed to support students from their freshmen year to their senior year. In terms of the incentive, we will provide both peer and professional mentoring opportunities, individualized meetings with staff, academic course support, and social enrichment. We also provide various benefits throughout their experience as our way to recognize the commitment of our participants. Each year, our program will offer a varying set of expectations that will contribute to the professional growth and development of successful Male Graduates of the Percy E. Sutton SEEK Program.
The MEC Chapter members will engage with each other on campus and throughout the City University of New York, and the surrounding Brooklyn community within the following areas:
Service: Members will be expected to engage in service opportunities on campus and within the city of Brooklyn and surrounding areas to ignite change in communities.
Social Engagement: Social engagement may include member breakfast and/ or lunch sessions, academic registration, mentorship, game/trivia nights, cultural excursions, local festivals and on campus events.
Academic Excellence Seminars: The hosting of seminars will provide an opportunity for faculty and staff to engage with students to discuss cultural experiences, current event topics, academic lectures and personal or professional development.
Philanthropy: Similar to the use of service as a way to give back to communities, the organization will engage in fundraising activities and provide donations to a non-profit of its choosing, as well as support organizations that aide others in moments if emergency situations.
