1 Spanish basic grammar: embedding the gender

There are different kinds of languages: Spanish is part of a group called inflected languages. In these languages, we change parts of the words to embed meaning.

For example, in English, we have “flower” vs “flowers.” Thus, with the -s at the end, we embed the number; in other words, we communicate that “here there is more than one flower.” Well, in different languages people embed other stuff… and this is what we will cover here.

In Spanish, we embed, in the verb, the person who does the action and also if it is one person or a group of people. Then, in other content words (nouns, adjectives, pronouns…), we embed -just as in English- the number. In addition, we embed gender. Yes, the gender, but… What gender do we embed? This is what we will discuss in this part of the book.
