Sensation and Perception book cover

Author(s): Dr. Jill Grose-Fifer, Students of PSY 3031, Edited by Dr. Cheryl Olman

Subject(s): Psychology, Cognitive and behavioural neuroscience

Publisher: CUNY Pressbooks

This book was remixed and edited by Dr. Jill Grose-Fifer of John Jay College, CUNY. Much of the original content was created by the students at the University of Minnesota in their PSY 3031: Sensation and Perception course and edited by their instructor, Dr. Cheryl Olman, as a class project, because there is no existing open-source textbook for Sensation and Perception. Content is, for the most part, re-used and re-mixed from existing open-source materials from Psychology and Anatomy textbooks.

The course has two over-arching themes or guiding principles, both of which rest on the basic understanding that perception is an interpretive act, which means that our perceptions are sometimes only loosely based on our sensory experiences:

  • Our brains shape our environment: there are many things that we simply do not perceive because we are not prepared to perceive them.
  • Our environments shape our brains: color categories and phonetic boundaries are just two examples of how our conscious access to sensory information is limited by the culture we grew up in.

Brain and Behavior explores the biological bases of behavior and mental processes. It examines how biological factors like genes, hormones, neurotransmitters, and brain structures influence psychological components like thoughts, emotions, memories, and actions. This free and open textbook provides a wide ranging and up-to-date introduction to the main topics and methods of biological psychology. It starts by covering foundations of biological psychology (brain anatomy, neurons, research methods), continues to higher-level topics that link biology and psychology (how drugs and hormones affect the brain and behavior; brain development; genetics; and emotions) and concludes with neural and behavioral differences associated with brain damage, neurological diseases, and psychological disorders.

This book has been edited from its original format in an attempt to provide a critical overview of Psychology for undergraduates in Introductory Psychology classes. It is a work in progress. In this version of the book, the materials in Chapters 9 through 15 have not yet been edited from their original format. TLH in a Box is an OER (Open Educational Resource) created in the third and final year of the Transformative Learning in the Humanities grant supported by the Mellon Foundation at The City University of New York. The grant supported public talks on innovative pedagogies and teaching workshops, a student summit, and a series of intensive peer-to-peer faculty seminars for CUNY faculty at all ranks (including adjuncts) in the humanities, arts, and interpretive social sciences. The TLH team created this Open Educational Resource that shares TLH’s antiracist teaching strategies and the transformative methods of TLH with the general public. This publication contains: teaching tools and more for faculty; templates, budget models, annual reports, and other resources for administrators and staff; and ideas for student engagement, including how to form a Student Advisory Board and hosting a virtual student summit.
