19 Introduction to Liberal Arts: Social Sciences and Humanities

Group of students filming video.

The liberal arts are a broad field of study that invites students to explore many subjects—for instance, literature, history, art, philosophy, psychology, and sociology—through multiple perspectives. Liberal arts students learn how to approach and analyze significant issues critically, articulate complex views, and develop creative solutions. A liberal arts education encourages students to ask questions, reflect deeply, and engage in meaningful discussions to explore how knowledge is shaped by different historical, cultural, and disciplinary contexts.

Main programs and tracks within discipline

The Liberal Arts: Social Science and Humanities program offers a broad and diverse range of disciplines. Examples include:

 Approaches to inquiry and research

The Liberal Arts encourages students to develop creative approaches to problems, carefully evaluating evidence and making arguments based on critical inquiry and reflection. Students make new discoveries by engaging critically with a wide range of subjects and considering issues from multiple angles. For example, students will investigate issues related to humanism, science, and technology in their Liberal Arts capstone course (LIB 200) at LaGuardia, integrating knowledge and methodologies from Liberal Arts disciplines such as philosophy, history, or psychology.
