Introduction to Nursing (Registered Nurse/RN) AAS Degree Program & to the LPN Certificate Program

General introduction to the discipline

The Practical Nursing Program, coordinated by the Health Sciences Department, offers a certificate in Practical Nursing. Graduates will be eligible to sit for the National Council of State Boards Licensure Examination for Practical Nurse (NCLEX-PN).

Nursing is a field rich in opportunities and offers enormous flexibility in career development. New graduates must be able to identify and meet client needs according to the parameters of professional practice in a variety of settings, have solid communication skills, and be familiar with computer technology. Graduates of the Registered Nursing Program are eligible to sit for the NCLEX-RN examination.

Main Programs and tracks within the discipline

Nursing:

  • LPN (Certificate program)
  • LPN to RN track (AAS degree eligible for RN license)
  • RN (AAS degree eligible for RN license)

 

The program consists of 66 credits, with a balance between nursing and general education courses. Graduates of LaGuardia’s RN program will possess the ability to:

  • Communicate effectively
  • Provide direct nursing care to clients of all ages who exhibit common, well-defined health problems;
  • Teach clients
  • Manage client care
  • Practice within the legal and ethical framework of the profession

 

There are approximately seventy-five different specialties in nursing. Nurses practice in hospitals, ambulatory care facilities, clients’ homes, schools, long-term care facilities, and industry and community agencies. They are engaged in direct client care, administration, education, and/or research. Nurses in advanced practice are prepared to assume greater autonomy in areas such as primary care, clinical specialties, anesthesia and midwifery.
