33 Competencies and Communication Abilities

Starting in your first semester and continuing throughout your academic journey at LaGuardia you will practice 21st century skills known as core competencies and communication abilities. These competencies and abilities will enable you to  use knowledge from your classes in new ways and to build the skills that colleges and employers value. While these skills support what you’re learning in your major, they will also be useful to you, whether you transfer early, graduate and transfer to a four-year college, go straight into a job or new career, or as a lifelong learner.

As a LaGuardia student, you will strengthen your proficiency in these three competencies:

Competency

Helps you…

Inquiry and Problem Solving

identify an issue, find evidence to solve it, and see if the solutions work

Global Learning

combine your class knowledge with the world around you whether it is in another part of the world or your local neighborhood

Integrative Learning

connect your class learning to other classes and what goes on in your everyday life

You will also build your skills in these three communication abilities: writing, speaking, and digital communication.
