15 Introduction to English

Each of these majors will help you develop your voice, critical mind, and creative potential Students who choose our English majors can expect to work closely with our faculty who are experts in their areas of research and passionate about student learning and advisement. Whether you major in English, Creative Writing, or Journalism, or simply want to explore our classes as electives, we offer a variety of courses that introduce students to diverse authors, hands-on research, and dynamic publication and internship opportunities.

Main programs and tracks within discipline

  1. English: When you become an English Major, you will work closely with accomplished and dedicated faculty to deepen your understanding of a diverse range of literatures. Being an English Major will allow you to develop writing, analytical, and research skills that are desirable for many workplaces such as marketing, publishing, and online content creation.
  2. Creative Writing : The Creative Writing Track of the English Major is for people who want to write literature, as well as to read and study it. You will experiment to see how far you can push language, and to bring new meaning into the world. You will get an instant audience in our writing workshops as you work on fiction, non-fiction, poetry, drama, and things less categorizable; and you will develop your craft by listening to, reading and talking about the works of your colleagues. You will work closely with your professors, all published writers and passionate teachers. In short, you will participate in a community of writers who share your creative spirit.
  3. Journalism: The Journalism Major is for students interested in storytelling and covering the news. You will find story ideas, interview and research, and write and edit news stories. As you become a creative, confident, and professional writer, the Journalism Major will provide hands on experience with beat reporting, digital journalism, broadcast journalism, feature writing, editing, and publishing.

Approaches to inquiry and research

English

You will learn

  • How to write clearly, effectively, and persuasively
  • How to research to support your own ideas
  • The entirety of the writing process, from brainstorming, outlining, and drafting, to composing, editing, and revising
  • How to offer suggestions to classmates respectfully and constructively
  • How to engage in close reading, critical thinking, literary analysis, interpretation, and persuasion

 

Creative Writing

You will learn

  • How to read, engage with and respond to challenging creative work by diverse authors across genres, styles, and time periods
  • How to draft, complete and revise short stories, poems, plays, and works of creative nonfiction
  • How to constructively critique the work of peers
  • How to edit and prepare your work for publication

Journalism

In this major, students get a chance to gain real world media experience and work with professionals from the industry. In spring, students work as interns for the college newspaper, The Bridge, and gain valuable hands-on experience. In the fall students get a chance to work as interns with community newspapers of Schneps Media, one of the largest media groups in the tri-state area. In addition to that, one LaGuardia student will receive the opportunity to research and report on an underrepresented issue of global importance through the Pulitzer Center Student Fellowship in collaboration with the journalism program. Students can propose projects focused on an issue occurring in the US or abroad that is underreported in the US media.
