General introduction to the discipline
Physical therapist assistants work under the direction and supervision of physical therapists and assist patients/clients recovering from injury or illness.
The Physical Therapist Assistant program at LaGuardia Community College is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education (CAPTE).
Main Programs and tracks within the discipline
The PTA program consists of pre-clinical and technical phases. Students must be an Undeclared Health- PTA major to apply for candidacy into the technical phase. Acceptance to the technical phase is limited to twice per year and is competitive. PTA students are responsible for familiarizing themselves with the PTA Admissions Handbook and obtaining further information by seeking advisement with the PTA program faculty and attending a PTA Orientation Session.

Approaches to inquiry and research
Physical Therapist Assistants (PTA) are compassionate and caring medical professionals who are empathetic good listeners with strong communication skills. PTAs are ethical, knowledgeable, motivated, responsible, proactive, and receptive to new ideas. They are analytical thinkers that are nonjudgmental and creative. PTAs are lifelong learners. PTAs need to be flexible, able to multitask, and enthusiastic. They have high physical and mental agility while having the ability to work well under stress. They enjoy working collaboratively with team members and are capable of adapting to different teaching and learning styles. PTAs are healthcare professionals ready and willing to serve the patients, the profession, and to positively influence the health of society.
