13 Introduction to the Education Program

The Education Program is committed to educating and graduating preservice teachers who:

  1. Can demonstrate the knowledge, skills and dispositions expected of preprofessional teacher education candidates,
  2. Are culturally responsive educators,
  3. Are critical thinkers so that they are prepared to enter the workforce and/or continue on to a professional teacher education program at the BA level.

Our program learning outcomes and curricula (programs of study) are tied to the New York State Teaching standards, the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP) standards, the Interstate New Teacher Assessment and Support Consortium (InTASC) standards, and LaGuardia’s General Education Core Competencies (Integrative Learning, Global Learning, and Inquiry and Problem Solving) and Communication (Oral, Written, and Digital) Abilities.

Approaches to inquiry and research

In the Education Program students learn to use traditional research methods to explore local and global issues and research questions. Students examine varied social science and humanities research, using qualitative and quantitative data collection methods.  In addition, students learn through inquiry based and experiential based projects, such as observational field experiences and integrated assignments that synthesize learning in courses and/or across the program. Students also learn to communicate these findings in oral, digital, and written formats. The traditional citation style used in this discipline is APA (American Psychological Association) documentation.
