This book

Vem Falar Português! Portuguese for All wishes to unite and offer representation and visibility not only to Brazil and Portugal, but also to under represented areas of the Lusophone world as a rich linguistic and cultural community for the learners of the Portuguese language.

The textbook is intended for language acquisition and instruction at the college level in North American universities.  The material covers three consecutive semesters of a language sequence, and it is divided into three main themes. The didactic content in Vem Falar Português! Portuguese for All addresses the four modalities of communication (listening, speaking, reading and writing), with grammatical explanations and examples, reading, listening and viewing passages, classroom activities, and material for group projects. The material offers students the opportunity to advance through progressing levels of complexity in their learning of Portuguese; from elementary to intermediate high. This book includes cultural topics from eight Portuguese speaking countries: Angola, Brazil, Cape Verde, East Timor, Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique, Portugal and Sao Tome and Principe.

At the City College of the City University of New York, Vem Falar Português! Portuguese for All may be used in PORT 12300, PORT 12400 and PORT 22600.

The grammar in Vem Falar Português! Portuguese for All shows the two varieties of the Portuguese language (commonly reffered to as the Brazilian and the European varieties). In terms of cultural content; the book offers text, dialogues, illustrations, photographs and videos that show the plurality of races, ethnicities, voices, identities and perspectives that exist in the Lusophone world.

Inclusiveness

Equally important in Vem Falar Português! Portuguese for All is the acknowledgment of inclusive language. Inclusive language in Portuguese refers to language that is non-discriminatory and respectful of all individuals, regardless of their gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation, or any other characteristic that may lead to discrimination.

In Portuguese, the use of inclusive language involves avoiding the use of language that reinforces gender stereotypes or excludes certain groups of people. For example, using gender-neutral pronouns (such as “eles” and “elas” instead of “eles” for both males and females) and avoiding gendered language (such as “homem” for man and “mulher” for woman) in job titles and other professional contexts can help create a more inclusive language environment.

Inclusive language is an important aspect of promoting equality and respect for all individuals, and it can play a significant role in challenging and changing attitudes that lead to discrimination and marginalization. By using inclusive language, speakers can help create a more inclusive and respectful society, where everyone feels valued and heard.
