The writing of The Companion has been a journey of passion and discovery for its authors–a journey that developed and fostered deep friendships. We dedicate this 7th edition to the memory of our dear friend and former co-author, Dr. Janet Liou-Mark.

Janet was a Professor Emerita of Mathematics at the New York City College of Technology. Her pursuit was to empower undergraduates majoring in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) through leadership development and life-long learning as early as their first year in college. Her efforts included the organization of the Peer-Led Team Learning (PLTL) mathematics workshops and the PLTL Leadership program. Her programs were recognized by the 2011 CUNY Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Mathematics Instruction, the 2014 Mathematical Association of America Metropolitan New York Section Award for Distinguished Teaching of Mathematics, and she received more than a dozen awards for her excellence in education. A dedicated humanitarian, Janet worked to develop libraries in Malawi, Africa, and elevated the presence of women in STEM by organizing professional women’s conferences.

Janet was one of the kindest and most compassionate human beings we have encountered, yet fearless in her quest to make a difference in education and the world around her.

During our time together writing previous editions of The Companion, we enjoyed sharing our own stories and struggles in each of our academic journeys. We laughed, commiserated, and formed bonds that will forever tie us together. We will always be your companions, Janet, and we are grateful for your voice in this edition.
